I looked back and saw the violent asshole i'd just chased away with my neighbor that he'd just beaten. they were smoking on her porch shooting the shit as if he hadn't just been dragging her screaming through my front lawn.

When we chased him off our lawn I thought I was a hero. I'd responded to that situation play-by-play the way I thought a hero would, except in the end it didn't make the slightest difference. She called him right back, she would call him right back every Sunday night for the rest of my stay in NC. I thought I was a hero, but it hit me pretty fast how absurdly helpless and irrelevant I was. She might as well had been punching herself in my lawn.

my neighbor lady probably still gets her lights knocked out every monday
I began to grow ice over my heart.

Similar thing happened to us here in c-springs. 'ex'girlfriend of one our neighbors knocked on our door at 4:30am with a bloody nose. Asked to use the phone. She called the cops and then was gone by the time they got here. We found the shoes I loaned her on the sidewalk along with the cordless house phone. The next morning she was back at our neighbors house in yet another screaming match on the front lawn.

Late reply, but hey.
I'm sure you learned that the south is a suck-nasty place, especially Greensborro.

Still wish you'd make your way to Ga. Give Atlanta some of your best tagging.
