april 2012
the beardance in the cave was phenomenal, Sindri wrapped strings of kanji flags around the stalactites and we lit up a buncha candles. We left a trail of glow sticks through the mini golf course leading to the cave entrance. The nightphantoms and beardancers all assembled and started throwing down as hard as ever. It was good to reunite with them all, but people were bummed I was up and leaving the next morning. I was colorado's one night stand, heh. blegh.

this whole night was crazy from start to finish.

Didn't notice the Nightphantom until I read the flavor text. Your life is downright magical, bro!

Out of curiosity, how do you get the shadows to look like that? I know you did a tutorial a while back, but it wasn't very specific. I'm trying to get a similar effect but can't quite swing it.

On this one I used a lot of gradients to save time. The lighting was mega hard to nail down because there were so many different sources and they were mostly coming from the floor. I dunno if that helps? heh, is there a specific area of the comic that you'd like me to explain better?

I guess its mostly the ones on the faces. I'm huessing its just several grey tones one on top of the other. Do you start with a dark grey and erase it to make it light. Or start light and go dark? Sorry to be so inquisitive.

nah dude, its cool. for the faces I mostly just guessed at a middle value, the added shadows and highlights and mixed them till they looked right. or for the simpler renderings, I started with a dark value and painted the highlights onto it - the reason I did it that way was because I'm still unfamiliar with upward lighting and that technique helps me figure it out.

Yeah, I can see that. I love how you've done it with relatively few shades of grey. It keeps it looking dimensional but without looking muddy either. The multiple light sources is also something I'm trying to rip off... uh I mean uh... be inspired by.

Thanks again for the tips.

My brother was also in Portland around that time. It's a magical place... And if you get to know the "hobos" there, they are awesome and have cool personalities.

Hey internet dude I just read through your entire comic history - all 333 pages. Its weird because I feel like I know you now?? You have a really interesting perspective, one that I wholly respect though I don't always agree with. Its been really cool "seeing" you grow and change through the years you've been drawing this. Thanks a ton for sharing your art, your honesty and what feels like your heart at times. This truly is a really special "comic." I have a massive urge to feed you cookies and host you, though I'll be a wandering soul for the next while as well. However, this random internet chick will let you know when I do have a comfy couch and cookies to offer if you want. Best of luck in the rest of your adventures, I'll be sure to follow them when I have internet.

I'll totally take you up on that someday caik, cookies and couches and internet strangers are three of the best things life can offer.
